Fundraiser; for the futurplans of Snowland Ranag School children
1. What is the fundraiser about? For who are we collecting money?
This fundraiser is mainly collecting money for the students who graduated at the Snowland Ranag Light of Education School. The school was founded by a Nepali Rinpoche and is currently under the responsibility of the head master of the school management Prabha Pradhan. In the Nepalese school system children have to finish 10 years of normal schooling before they can enter a college or start to work. The first class accomplished now their whole 10 years school and would like to attend a college for their class 11 and 12. These years are compatible with our 4 years at college. With a college degree the children would have the chance to study afterwards or start a vocational training.
The normal school time can only be graduated if the children pass a final exam. This examination is called the SLC. The whole class 10 of Snowland Ranag School passed this exam and is thereby ready to apply for college.
The children come from very poor remote areas of Nepal. Most of them from upper parts like Dolpa, Mustand and Humla. In these regions the conditions are quite devastating and the families have often not enough money to raise their children nor can they send them to schools.
To give their children a better chance in life they send them to schools like the Snowland Ranag School. They are a boarding school with hostels for girls and boys.
Our class 10 students are from similar backgrounds. Their siblings can’t afford to pay for their further education. If the sum for their living in Kathmandu and the necessary school fees don’t get raised together the children would have to go back to their villages or work maybe for the rest of their lives without any upward mobility.
2. What are the plans to help the children?
The Snowland Ranag Light of Education School gets supported by an Australian NGO with the name IGWR. ( In Giving We Receive) The mentioned NGO is planning to take the graduated students out of the primary school and move them into a flat close to the NGO office or to hostels of the schools they are attending.
The children are 16 to 20 years old now. They are old enough to live with a bit help by themselves. The children are used to take care of themselves and live with other students together and because they were class mates for over ten years they know each other very well. To live in a flat would have the advantage for them to learn how to handle the groceries, how to cook, clean and manage their life totally independent. They would also make more contacts to neighbors and other students and establish a feeling for the Nepali society. As they were not allowed to leave the previous school the children haven’t seen much of the outside world, they will need to raise a feeling for it and gain new friendships.
From the flat the children would go to college everyday and if possible attend some extra activities like football.
The NGO will organize the facilities for the flat, check the students regularly, help out if necessary and manage the incoming bills.
The college will be chosen by the Executive Board Member of the Snowland Ranag Light of Education School.
3. How much would it cost? With what amount are we calculating?
The expenses for one child will be around 7000.- nRs a month. This amount is around 75.- Dollars per month.
The mentioned sum includes all living costs and the school fees for one child.
The calculation is according to a normal Nepali standard. For the girls it could be a bit more because they would need a guardian constantly. The country is not dangerous but it’s a cultural matter and keeps the risk onto a minimum. For young girls without parental protection it is better to employee a security. About each child will be regularly written a report to inform the sponsor and if wished the sponsors can get in contact with the students personally.
With the experience she would also be able to find out where the origins are of the diseases and face with the management the necessary changes to provide the children and safe and healthy surrounding.
